A TASTE OF PLACE

Real food, real wine, real people

Farmgate Wines are a celebration – of people, of the foods they produce and of the region they call home, Hawke’s Bay.

Farmgate is about a community– a community shaped by geography but made from people.

That they come from Ngatarawa Wines and the Corban family is no surprise. Founder Alwyn Corban and his cousin Brian, company chairman, have always had a profound sense of heritage. They are, after all, the fourth and third generation of New Zealand’s first family of wine, carrying on the legacy of Assid Abraham Corban, who brought a 300-year-old tradition of winemaking to New Zealand when he migrated here from Lebanon.

The new venture came to fruition in early-2008. “Farmgate is about a community– a community shaped by geography but made from people“ , Alwyn says “Farmgate Wines celebrate the unique flavours of Hawke’s Bay, with each wine dedicated to a local artisan food producer, the wine style matching the food they produce".

The limited release wines have won critical acclaim from wine experts and a solid following amongst “foodies” and consumers. They are available direct from www.farmgatewines.co.nz - from the Ngatarawa cellar door and from selected restaurants and food and wine retailers (find a retailer near you).

The cellar door option is a reward in itself. Based in the Glazebrook’s historic racing stables, Ngatarawa is a key stop on the Hawke’s Bay wine trail. Enjoy the hospitality, the wonderful setting and the Ngatarawa family of brands – Alwyn, Glazebrook, Silks and Stables. And of course Farmgate.

The Corban Family

When a young Assid Abraham Corban left his village of Shweir in the mountains of Lebanon in 1891, he began a journey that would see he and his family establish their roots in New Zealand and make their name synonymous with wine in their new country. It would be another seven years before his wife Najibie and two sons, Khaleel and Wadier, were to join him in Auckland.

Assid brought with him a 300 year winemaking heritage. He established himself as a successful haberdasher in Queen Street, Auckland and finally in 1902, was able to purchase land in Henderson and plant his first vineyard. With his wife Najibie and nine children, the foundations of the Corban family grapegrowing and winemaking enterprise were laid.

Innovation and integrity are hallmarks of the Corban family's success in the wine industry. When the family sold the original business in the 1970s, they were the leading winemakers in the country. They had pioneered much in the industry in a hostile environment and led many initiatives to improve legislation, wine quality and the widespread acceptance of New Zealand wine.
